Identification:

-Solitary, essentially trunkless with 8-20 leaves
-Fan-shaped leaf 2-5 feet wide, costapalmate, smooth petiole
-Flower stalk above foliage, 6-10 feet tall, blooms in early summer
-Round, black fruit ⅜ inch in diameter


Note: The Dwarf Palmetto is an understory plant found throughout the southeastern United States. Usually associated with wet, swampy soils, the Dwarf Palmetto is widely adaptable and found growing in many environments. In the landscape it makes an interesting specimen or groundcover in naturalistic settings. Random specimens appear around campus and are quickly eliminated by mowers and trimmers. Then again, many possible suspects prove to Cabbage Palm (Sabal palmetto) seedlings.
